Back to School 2011

This year just keep it simple, and keep it natural.

Make sure you child's hair has had a good trim, which makes it much easier to manage the hair.

Wash it well and put in some conditioner, comb it well, then rinse the hair thoroughly.

You can chose to towel dry, or blow dry lightly, using a light set in lotion, begin to section the hair and 2 strand.

You can style with ribbons or simply let it hang down.

Now off to school she goes.

I am wishing all those students a successful new school year. Work hard and stay natural.

Guess What Age Group is Locking Their Hair in Big Numbers?

The young girls ages 7 - 12 years.

I have been observing how each couple of years,a different population begins their own natural hair journey.

I think it's because the young girls, have seen their mothers, Aunties, etc. lock their own hair, that they are now confident enough to ask if their own hair can be locked.

My daughter has dreadlocks, and she loves her long hair. She has been locking since the age of 4 years, and she will be 10 years in 2 weeks.

I believe because the role models in her life, such as her mother, her God mother, her Aunties, etc. wear locks and it is a natural part of our lives. So in her world it's life.

I must say it makes me proud to know that our girls will have a closer sense of authentic self, and to know that we opened up those gates when we committed to our natural hair journey.

To all the little girls, stay beautiful, stay natural.

I love You my little sistas!

Sesame Street Song: I Love My Hair (Video)

I am so excited to listen and enjoy this song geared for our young minds. I wish when I was little, there was a song like this.

It gives me, in my adulthood, a sense of pride that Sesame Street has declared to air this song. I grew up watching this show. It is so important to plant good seeds of self esteem early.

 

Why has it taken this long???????

I meet Ayesha at the park, and admired how she was doing her girls hair at the park, while taking in the good weather.

This is the way it used to be long ago. I love the culture of African hair care. Always creating an opportunity for bonding with our young girls, through hair.

My Daughter and Her Beautiful Dreadlocks

 

Santina is 8 years and loves, loves her hair. Girls in school always ask her if that is her hair.

Her favorite saying is " These are not dreads, they are locks, because there is nothing dreadful about my hair!"

I find that many mothers fear to lock their little girls hair for many reasons. All I know is Santina gets complements from all nationalities, men, women, girls and boys.

Most importantly she embraces her uniqueness, because she doesn't know many young girls her age with locks.

Personally I find her beautiful as she is.
