What is a Straw Set?

A straw set is a style involving many small spiral curls, that are achieved by using drinking straws.

I believe this style was introduced by the young teenage girls who were styling their own hair inexpensively.

Well today it happens to be one of the leading options for transitional styles from a perm to natural hair.

Especially for individuals who have more permed hair and very little new growth, who also don't want to add extensions to their hair.

It's also great for all natural hair types, at least 3 inches and above. When plucked out, one can achieve an afro filled with character and body.

Lasts about 7-14 days or longer, should not be exposed to water or moisture otherwise it shall flop. Looks better as it ages.

Get up go kind of style.

What are Iversons?

 
 

Cornrows called "Iversons" were named after the basketball player Allen Iverson, because this was the hair style he wore at the height of his career. However, this style has been around before Iversons' time.

It's a combination of many small cornrows that are eventually braided into one big cornrow. Leaving an interesting detailed design.

Great for men, woman, and older children.

Style can last up to 1 to 2 months. Can be done with or without hair added, as is in the photo.

What is Wrap-A-Loc?

Process where you wrap hair, especially long locks, around the wrap-a-loc tool. This tool used to "create long lasting curls, spirals and waves, on locs."

The tool can be left in for at least a week. No more long hours under the dryer. When removed from the hair the curls are tighter than ever before.

This style can last at least 3 to 4 weeks with good care and dry cleaning. It sure is a show stopper and makes long locks look short again without the hair cut. I find it's a great option for individuals that  have very long locks.

What is a Comb Twist?

Comb twist also known as Nubian twist, is a natural hair style that requires styling with a special fine tooth comb.

Usually a popular option for people who just cut off the perm and are transitioning to natural hair. Also popular with individuals who are thinking of locking their hair.

This style can only work well for short hair. It is possible to comb twist long hair, but it creates alot of tangling.

It lasts about 7 to 14 days. It's great for all ages, and it's a nice introduction to dreadlocks.

What is a Sis Twist?

A Sis Twist is a style that is similar to a 2 Strand Twist but has synthetic hair extensions added to it. It gives a fuller appearance and has a natural finish.

This style is great during the transitional phase from chemicals to natural hair.

It requires very little maintenance, and it's a great hairdo for the beach or the pool.

The hair comes in different colors. Usually shoulder length or shorter. Very light weight, and this style can last up to 2 months.

My clients love it and they say it makes their hair grow well, not to mention the attention they get from the public.

Two Strand Twists

    

A 2 Strand Twist is when you take a small section of the hair and split in to two equal parts. You then twist the two sections of hair around one another up to the tip which will then form a cork screw appearance once dried and untwisted.

This client wanted a professional look to wear to work and I must say she was pleased. I twisted her hair and then roded it up with the flexi rods to add body and give it that soft feminine touch. I then pined it up to really give it that professional edge she was looking for.

What are Sisterlocks?

 

 

As defined by Dr. Cornwell founder of Sisterlocks (on my left).

"Sisterlocks creates a stable woven framework within which the natural interlocking process can take place."

I trained with Dr. Joanne Cornwell in June 2008. What an experience! So many good hearted trainees were gathered together. There is a growing population of sisterlock lovers, so be on the lookout.

Bantu Knots

Bantu knots can be done on natural hair or permed hair. Usually lasts longer if your hair is natural. Small parts are made through the hair and each section of hair is tightly wrapped around it's roots. The parts on the scalp are what makes this style so striking.

It is definitely an eye catcher and draws a lot of outside attention. I believe it takes a person with confidence to wear this look.

Locks too, can be twisted in to Bantu knots as well, and after a couple of days when you undo the locked knots you can then wear another look of very curly hair. I used to do this when my locks were long to avoid long dryer time, and when my locks were dry  I would undo it into a beautiful curly head of locks.

What are Lock Extensions?

   

Lock Extensions: The creation and manipulation of natural hair extensions around existing hair to have a final product that appears like mature locks. Basically it's a technique we use to wrap natural hair extension around the individuals hair to create a lock like appearance. It is a process that takes on average 6-8 hours. I recommend a consultation before hand and perhaps a test sample. Your hair needs to be 2-3 inches in length so as to reduce slippage. I recommend this to individuals who want to lock their hair and are afraid of that commitment. It gives you various styling options and is a nice way to introduce yourself to the lock world.
